Canon may only be well known for its digital cameras and portable printers right now, but wait a few years and the company will launch an entirely new type of television display. One that will rival the Sony and Samsung-backed OLED display, and will spark yet another “format” war in display technology.
Canon’s TV of the future will be based on what they call “surface-conduction electron-emitter displays” or SED. Their advantages over present type TVs being that they produce CRT TV-like wide viewing angles and deep colors, while being as thin as current generation LCD or plasma displays.
If not for the three-year delay that Canon faced because of a lawsuit filed against them by a company called Applied Nanotech, SED TVs could already be in existence. But alas, they aren’t, but nothing is stopping Canon now, so this new type of TV just might finally start appearing in a few years.
